Facts And Stats

Poverty

On average, 57% of the population lives below the poverty line.

In some parts of the Gaza strip, around 65% of the people are poor.

Mother and Child Health

Between 2000 and 2006, sixty-nine women gave birth at military checkpoints

10 % of pregnant women have been delayed on the road for between two to four hours while 6% have spent more than four hours for the same journey. Without roadblocks, the journey takes 15 to 30 minutes on average.

35 newborn babies have died at checkpoints as well as five women

Impact of Aid Embargo

The number of Palestinians living in poverty has risen by 30% since the embargo began

46% of Palestinians do not have enough food to meet their needs

Checkpoints, roadblocks and the construction of a 700km wall have restricted movement and many Palestinians cannot travel to work, sell goods at market or even access water.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) was the biggest employer in the Palestinian territories but the embargo has led to a 60% drop in its income.

PA is now unable to pay salaries, leading to the deterioration of services. Four hundred doctors in Gaza have lost their jobs because there is no money to pay them.
