Heavy monsoon rains have caused extensive flooding in western India, leaving thousands homeless. It remains unclear how many people have died in the disaster.
The waters washed away people's belongings and many have little access to food and clean drinking water. The lack of adequate sanitation facilities has put the affected population at risk of water-borne diseases like typhoid, dysentery and hepatitis.
Damage in south Gujarat
The worst affected states are Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, where property, crops, roads, railways and flood embankments have been damaged.
Gujarat's Surat district sustained severe damage with around 6 million people affected by the flooding. A total of 205 relief camps have been set up for 19,000 people, and volunteer groups are running community kitchens and organising rescue teams.
This is reported to be the worst flood that has hit Gujarat in 200 years.
IR Action
An Islamic Relief team is on its way to southern Gujarat to assess the situation in Surat and the surrounding areas.
Islamic Relief is working through a local partner, OFFER and has allocated an initial £10,000 for emergency relief.
