After 55-year-old Mohammad’s* home in Homs was bombed, he fled Syria for Wadi Ahmed on Lebanon’s northern border. He is one of at least 7,000 Syrians who have been displaced into Lebanon since the uprising began in March 2011. However some experts estimate that the real figure is closer to 18,000.
Mohammad, with his wife and four children, had to bribe Syrian officials in order to pass the Syria-Lebanon border, even though he was crossing legally.
On arriving in Lebanon, Mohammad, his wife and their children were taken in by a host family, who gave them an old empty house to live in while providing them with a meal every day.
The house doesn’t have any appliances, a kitchen or a place to store water and two of the rooms were full of rubble when the family arrived. Mohammad explained, “Although I am very grateful for the help we have received, without which, we’d have no shelter, the house is in a very poor condition and requires a lot of maintenance.”
“I can’t afford fuel, so I go out to chop wood every day to warm up the cold harsh night, to make sure I can keep my children warm,” Mohammed explained.
Mohammad lives with diabetes and was in poor health while he crossed the border, with his retina bleeding. He worries about how he will cope with diabetes in the rural area he is staying in. “There are no medicines for chronic illnesses in Wadi Ahmad and so far only 15% of my medical bill has been paid.”
Islamic Relief was the first agency to help Mohammad, providing him with blankets and a family hygiene kit. “Thank you for your kind and generous support, particularly at this time, when my children are suffering because of the extremely cold weather.”
