Haiti earthquake: One year on
12 January 2011

Parc Sainte Claire camp, set up by Islamic Relief 11 days after the earthquake

Twelve months ago, at 4.53pm, a powerful earthquake struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti. On January 12, 2010, over 200,000 people died and 1.5 million were made homeless.

Islamic Relief’s work so far

After setting up the first organised camp for displaced people eleven days after the earthquake in Haiti, Islamic Relief continued to provide support to thousands of survivors.  We have since founded another two camps, housing a total of over 5,000 people. People in our camps receive regular drinking water, access to washing areas and clean toilets.

Each of the three camps has its own committee, which organises the community and coordinates with Islamic Relief, providing regular feedback on the changing needs of the residents.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, Islamic Relief provided regular food to camp residents. As well as taking care of many of their immediate needs, we are also helping local people to rebuild their lives and communities. Over the last twelve months, we have provided 1,820 job opportunities to residents and we have trained over 180 people in IT skills. By equipping people with the skills and opportunities to earn a living, Islamic Relief aims to enable people to support themselves once more.

Plans for the future

Islamic Relief’s current projects in Haiti are aimed at improving the levels of sanitation in our camps. During the next stage of our programme, we will be continuing to focus on Cholera prevention, hygiene and rehabilitation projects.
Over the next few months, we will be constructing temporary shelters for families whose homes were destroyed and continuing our livelihood projects which provide our camp residents with jobs so that they can begin to support themselves.

After repairing two badly damaged schools, Islamic Relief is now concentrating on rebuilding a school that was completely destroyed in the earthquake.
